The round shape of lentils appears to be like coins, which is a representation of wealth and abundance. Italians believe that eating lentils on Capodanno is good fortune and will bring financial success for the new year.
As well as lentils, the tradition follows with different dishes like the “cotechino”, a type of sausage which creates a magical and festive meal.

A distinctive Italian tradition is to wear red underwear on New Year’s Eve, as a symbol of good luck to keep away evil spirits. It is believed that the colour red brings happiness, love and prosperity in the upcoming year.
Another belief and tradition is throwing old items out of the window which is a symbol of letting go of the past.
As midnight approaches, friends and family often toast with a glass of wine to welcome the new year with hope and joy.

Celebrations then continue with big fireworks, public events and many concerts, making it magical all night and all around Italy.
After the celebrations, many Italians spend a peaceful and relaxing day on January 1st, which often includes enjoying a big lunch with the family. This is a time for reflection and setting intentions for the year ahead.
Buon Capodanno a tutti!
