Five Fantastic Markets to Visit in Italy this Christmas
Posted on
The festive season is soon to be upon us, and what better way to get in the spirit than to visit a magical Christmas market whilst staying at our villas to rent in Italy this winter? We’ve picked out just five of our favourites that we certainly think are worth visiting this year:
The Mercato Tedesco di Natale
This German Christmas Market is located at the Piazza Santa Croce in Florence. The traditional market held in Heidelberg, Germany inspires the event itself, offering you an authentic experience, but in an Italian setting. Indulge in the German delicacies available and purchase some homemade decorations and handicrafts; this is a great opportunity to seek out some really special gifts for your loved ones this Christmas! You may have come to Italy to explore the Italian culture, but this market gives you a chance to experience some classic German traditions too, bringing two worlds together to celebrate!
Medieval Candle Market
Celebrating the name of the region, Candelara (meaning candle), the Medieval Candle Market brings the region of Le Marche alight during the colder months. The people of the town switch off all streetlights in the last week of November, and instead line the streets with beautifully crafted candles, illuminating the path to the market. Here you will find the most stunning variety of handcrafted candles which you can purchase to fill your own home with a warming glow this Christmas.
Il Paese di Natale
Translating to ‘the country of Christmas’ this market in Sant’Agata Feltria is known as one of the most stunning Christmas markets in the country. The delicately detailed decorations will leave you stunned in awe, as the medieval fortress is transformed into a Christmas haven for all to enjoy. This event is particularly perfect for your family holidays, as the kids will be able to take a visit to see Santa, as well as his reindeers and elves! This also offers another fantastic shopping experience, with handmade wreaths and gifts aplenty, all met with a wide array of festive performances, from music acts to nativity scenes, bringing the village cheer to life in the winter months.
Cagliari Christmas Market
Located in Sardinia at the Piazza del Carmine, this event is one that will thrill foodies, offering the chance to taste some of the finest delicacies available. The people of the region all join together to celebrate the fine produce of Sardinia, keeping a strong focus on local produce only; this market will show you the true passion that the Sardinians hold about their produce. Beginning in the second week of December, this event continues up until just a few days before we welcome in the New Year.
Bologna Christmas Market
This Christmas Market is one of the longest running markets in all of Italy, dating back to 1796! The event is held across two locations; giving you the opportunity to embark on an adventure you won’t forget across Bologna. Indulge in some of the festive nougat and treat yourself to some traditional treats as you venture through this magical paradise. Whilst you’re here, you can take the chance to visit the San Pietro Cathedral, which is located just behind the market.
